“Are you sure about this?”

“Absolutely,” Sadie said, reaching out to give Sam a hug. They’d been talking for a couple of hours, going over and over everything, but Sadie had finally convinced him. Now Sam held on to her for a minute longer, and when he let her go, he was smiling.

“I seriously owe you for this, Sadie.”

“No way. It’s going to be fun.” She opened up a new page on her phone notepad and said, “Let’s get down to it. I love a good list, so we’ll just write down everything we can think of right now and then add to it as we go.”

“Did I miss something?”

Sadie and Sam both turned to look at Justin as he walked across the courtyard. She studied his face for some clue as to how the Carey family meeting had gone, but Justin’s expression was deliberately neutral.

Which told her one thing. It hadn’t gone well.

“Miss something?” Sam asked, shooting Sadie a quick glance. “Well, what you saw was a relieved celebration, but it really sort of depends on you agreeing.”

“Agreeing to what?” Justin looked from him to Sadie and back again. Confusion sounded in his voice when he asked, “What’s going on?”

“Kind of a long story,” Sam said, “but I’ll give you the Cliffs Notes version.”

“Since I just got off the freeway, I appreciate it,” Justin said.

“Kate called me this morning, crying,” Sam said.

‘What happened?” Justin stepped closer.

“Our wedding venue happened,” Sam said and scrubbed one hand across his face. “You remember, Justin. I took you to that Victorian house in Old Town, San Diego?”

“Yeah,” he said, “I remember. Kate found that place for you guys to get married in.”

“Exactly.” He glanced at Sadie. “She really loved the grounds for the reception and I didn’t care where we got married, as long as we did.”

Sadie grinned. “I love that.”

“Right,” Justin said. “So what’s wrong?”

“Kate called me in tears this morning. A water heater blew out and flooded the whole place.” Sam shook his head. “They’re going to be closed for a month while the disaster crews come in to clean it all up.”

“Oh man, that’s terrible,” Justin said, shoving both hands into his pockets. “How’s Kate handling it?”

Sadie stared at him. “How do you think she’s handling it? It’s two weeks before her wedding.”

Justin rubbed his forehead. “Yeah. Of course. Sorry.”

“Anyway,” Sam said. “The venue called her this morning and she’s been crying ever since.”

“Can’t blame her,” Sadie said.

“No, but I tried to help.” Sam shrugged. “Told her it didn’t matter where we got married and we could just get our families and go to the courthouse.”

“Oh, Sam,” Sadie muttered.

He sighed. “Yeah. That’s when the screaming started.”

“Okay, I get the disaster. What I still don’t get is why you were celebrating when I got here.”

“Because,” Sam said, “as long as you go along with it, Sadie saved the day. And probably my life.”

“Well, you are my friend, so I’d prefer you alive,” Justin said. “What’s the solution?”

“We hold the wedding here,” Sadie told him.
